The Salvation Army, Preston, PR1 7N

on Wednesday, March 19th 2014 from 10.00 to 3.30 pm.

The conference is about Christian Ministry and Engagement in parishes or circuits in Urban Priority Areas or where there are deprived Council / Social Housing Estates.

Our keynote speaker/facilitator will be Bishop Laurie Green of the National Estates Churches Network. We hope to draw together church leaders, church planters and community activists from across Lancashire. Some of them have already met together to share experiences and a number attended the conference Laurie and National Estates Churches Network held in Manchester in October.

We are planning for the day to be very interactive with lots of workshop groups and sharing of stories – leaving with a deeper understanding of how we can better support some of our most vulnerable communities. (The day should be of interest to clergy, community workers, church planters, activists or mission minded congregation members living or working in such neighbourhoods. The focus is likely to be on work in traditional mainly white working class areas rather than on multicultural inner cities, though we recognize the diversity of neighbourhoods even within a single parish.)

Just Love Lent - Church Urban Fund lent resources Everyone longs for love. Who could possibly be against it? It seems uncontroversial. Jesus was the only human to love perfectly. The response of his fellow humans was to execute him brutally. Love is more controversial – more disruptive – than we realise.   This Lent we have a range of resources based around a new book written by Angus Ritchie of the Contextual Theology Centre and our Chair Paul Hackwood.   Just Love uses the Gospel readings for Lent to explore how Jesus loved, and why this love led him to the cross. It draws out the implications of his transforming love – both for our individual lives and for our social and economic order.   An e-Valentine card will promote the book on Feb 14th and resources will be available for individuals, small groups, children /young people and a sermon outline.   The book will be available to order on line during w/c 3 February and the kindle version is available now on Amazon.

Money speaks louder than works - latest CUF research report plus a reminder about our ABCD training event The Church of England is well-placed to make a powerful and effective contribution to the growth of the credit union sector. If a substantial proportion of the 1.7 million regular church attendees were to join a credit union – investing some of their savings or taking out small loans - the sector could well achieve its goal of growing from one to two million members. The aim of this research is to deepen our understanding of churchgoers' experience of, and attitudes towards, credit unions and so shed light on how best to encourage future engagement. The report makes recommendations about the steps that need to be taken to significantly increase membership of credit unions amongst churchgoers. These recommendations will help to encourage churchgoers to become more active supporters of credit unions, by deepening their knowledge and understanding of the sector and its value. You can download copies of the full report and the executive summary from the CUF website. The full research findings will be presented at a Synod fringe event: 1.15pm on Wednesday 12 February. Creative Employment Programme - deadline 14 February 2014

 

The £15 million, National Lottery funded programme is aimed at increasing work and training opportunities for unemployed young people within the creative sector. The programme will provide funding for 6,500 new  traineeships, apprenticeships and paid internship opportunities to help young unemployed people enter the arts and cultural workforce. Employment created will be in a wide range of disciplines, from technical to administrative roles, provided they are located in England and fall within the Arts Council England's footprint of: Music, Dance, Theatre, Literature, Visual Arts, Contemporary Craft, Combined Arts, Carnival, Circus, Galleries, Museums, and Libraries.  The programme will provide part wage grants to employers who create new apprenticeship and internship job opportunities for young unemployed people aged 16-24.  Employers will need to make an application for funding in order to access a part wage grant.

EAGA Charitable Trust Grant Programme - deadline 7 February 2014

 

The Trust supports projects and research into the causes of fuel poverty. There is no minimum or maximum grant level that organisations can apply for and most grants last between two and three years. During 2014 the Trust will fund work that promotes the understanding and combatting of fuel poverty.

Poverty and Homelessness Action Week : 25 January - 2 February 2014

As we begin 2014 by wishing friends a Happy and Prosperous New Year, we are all too aware that many people in Lancashire will continue to face anxiety and struggle, poverty and insecurity. The rising demand on food banks, the continued high levels of unemployment and low pay, the shortage of affordable housing, the reduced budgets for local authorities and the impact of welfare reform and benefits sanctions have had an impact in many congregations and in the community work that is linked to churches. Together Lancashire is committed to helping churches and local communities improve people's lives through activities aimed at Tackling Poverty Together. We value your prayers, interest and support in our work this year.

Every year many churches and projects have marked the final week of January as Poverty and Homelessness Action Week.

This year at Together Lancashire we are hoping that every church in the county will mark the week in some way. At the very least we hope you will be able to offer some special prayers for local people who are facing poverty, have no fixed abode or are at risk of homelessness.

Here are a few more ideas:

You could show a short video clip in your Sunday Services or midweek groups. The Together Lancashire video is available online at http://www.cuf.org.uk/together-lancashire or on a DVD disk from our office. You could explore, in sermons or through a study course, what the bible says about poverty and the challenge for Christians to respond by prayer, by giving or sharing their resources, and by speaking up against injustice. There is a huge range of resources available, and we'd be happy to point out specific things that may be of use.

If you are not already in contact with them, you could contact your local food-bank, homelessness project, work club, money advice centre, or community centre to see how you can support them through prayer, donations or offering volunteering time. Together Lancashire has a wide network of local contacts with such organisations and would be happy to put you in touch with appropriate people.
